…Says it needs to uphold democracy
A civil activist and philanthropist, Princess Olatorera Majekodunmi-Oniru has called on the United States and the international community to lend support not to Nigeria’s entrenched political elite, but to the genuine democratic emergence of visionary and people-centered leadership in the country.

In an open letter to Trump, quoted in a statement titled: “On the Urgent Need to Uphold Democracy and Human Dignity Amid President Trump’s Calls to End Christian Killings in Nigeria”, issued yesterday, Princess Oniru addressed recent remarks portraying Nigeria as ‘a disgraced country’.
While acknowledging the deep governance challenges confronting Africa’s most populous nation, she emphasised that the crisis is not about religion but about “governance, justice, and humanity itself”.
“The greatest contribution the United States and its allies can make at this pivotal moment is to support the genuine democratic emergence of visionary, credible, and people-centered Nigerian leaders; not the preservation of a kleptocratic status quo that has entrenched poverty, division and despair.
“True partnership must empower integrity and merit, not those who have rigged themselves into power through corruption and coercion”, she stated.
Princess Olatorera urged Washington and global partners to focus their engagement on rebuilding Nigeria’s democratic institutions and strengthening the rule of law.
She stressed that the country’s renewal depends on principled cooperation aimed at restoring accountability and fostering leadership that prioritizes the welfare of its people. “Only through principled engagement and unwavering support for democracy can Nigeria’s citizens rebuild their nation in peace and dignity, free from the devastation of renewed conflict”, she affirmed.
Concluding her remarks, she expressed optimism about constructive international collaboration.
According to the statement, “As a people-centered, presidential leader, Princess Olatorera Majekodunmi-Oniru is propelling a new generation of visionary, people-first leadership, restoring accountability, rebuilding trust, and ensuring equality, prosperity, and shared success for all Nigerians and global partners.”
Her comments come as the United States President Donald Trump refer to Nigeria as a “disgraced country”. This is even while he threatened to send military to the country to end ‘genocide against Christians’.
